Vegetarian Blues

We went to Chili’s in Bay Shore, NY yesterday. Aside of the company and the server nothing rocked. Unfortunately the menu is not vegetarian-friendly. My son wanted the cheese quesadilla. We asked if the chef could add corn and beans in the quesadilla, and were told those could only be ordered as sides. I ordered the Chicken Bacon Quesadilla without the bacon and chicken. My request to add beans instead was also turned down. “No substitution” was the reply. The menu had southwestern Mac ‘n Cheese and I was so looking forward to that but the server came back to tell us that it had meat too. What a downer!

Yet Chili’s is not the only culprit. TFIF, Applebee’s or Ruby Tuesday also have menus that are not vegetarian-friendly. I guess being a “chain restaurant” that serves frozen food made to look fresh, Chili’s is not required to think or serve healthy or vegetarian. Yet what a shame, that Queso with chips could not be served without beef.

Will it take another century for the realization to set in, that meat is not requisite to taste? I hope not.
